5 Nutrition Tips For Losing Weight

Start Small

Completely overhauling your diet sounds like a fast track to success, but making too big of a change too soon might just set you up for failure. Make a few little changes over the first two to three weeks of your new diet. These small changes should be easy to make and once you get used to them, you can make more. Think about it. Would you rather try to cut down on soda first or try to quit red meat cold turkey? The point is, if you start with little things, it will make bigger changes in the future easier to achieve.

Consider Portion Sizes

Another easy, small change you can make is adjusting your portion sizes, even if you aren’t really changing what you’re eating. A good first step in any weight loss plan is to stop overeating. Overeating is very easy to do and most of us are guilty of it, but if you are more mindful of your portions, you might find success more quickly than you think. Carefully read food and serving labels and do your best not to eat more than the recommended serving.

Add Protein, Subtract Sugar

Protein is an essential ingredient in any weight loss program. Not only does it help build and repair muscle, but it can act as an appetite suppressant and make feel fuller for longer. You can get healthy amounts of protein from seafood, poultry, protein shakes, eggs, nuts, and broccoli. As for sugar, you should avoid as much added, unnecessary sugar as possible. Excessive added sugar will contribute to weight gain and excess body fat. Swap the soda for some juice!

Be Aware of Carbs

Added sugars should be avoided, unnecessary carbs are a big no-no if you’re trying to lose weight. Carbohydrates are essential for energy, but refined carbs specifically, like ones found in white bread and pasta, can spike your blood sugar which leads to hunger and increased cravings. Low carb diets can be even more helpful for your health than low fat diets.

Snack on Fruits

Needing a midday snack at the office? Instead of going for the chips, how about a handful of blueberries? This is a small change that will go a long way. Fresh fruits have virtually no calories compared to other snacks and they offer sweet, sugary-like flavor that will satisfy your rumbling tummy.
