If you have sprained an ankle or done something more serious like required back surgery, you know that staying active can be a huge challenge. Here, we will give you a few ways to stay active while injured. Of course, these tips won’t apply to every injury. If you’re recovering from an invasive major surgery, your doctor might recommend avoiding physical activity until certain thresholds are met. But if you are nursing a relatively minor but painful injury, there are things you can do so you aren’t completely sedentary.

How can I exercise while injured?

Walking

Maybe it sounds too simple, but if you can put weight on your lower body, a simple walk will keep your body loose and will burn at least a few calories more than just sitting around. If you have a broken arm, you shouldn’t lift anything, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a stroll or even a light jog around the block. If, however, you are recovering from a leg injury, keeping weight off of it might be better.

Pool Workout

Exercising in a pool results in much lower impact on your body. All Xperience Fitness locations offer a junior Olympic size pool and water classes great for anyone who may be nursing an injury. Swimming laps is an excellent option because no lifting is needed other than that of your own body out of the water. Consider a pool workout as some kind of therapeutic recovery method.

Small Weights

If your injury really has you down and out to the point where you’re either in bed or on your couch, consider ordering some small dumbbells under five pounds. Simply lift these weights whenever you have a chance around the house. Little arm exercises will at least keep your muscle memory sharp and your body as loose as possible before returning back to your normal workout routine.
